Rare Two-Toed Sloth Born at Wild Florida

First baby to be born to the attraction's young breeding pair

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (Sept. 15, 2015) — A male two-toed sloth was born at Wild Florida Adventure Park on May 22. The cub, named George, was born to 4-year-old Ana, a first-time mom. The content pair are enjoying the spotlight in their new exhibit.

During George's first nine months of life, he will spend the majority of the day sleeping in the loving arms of his mother as she easily swings from branch to branch. In the wild, two-toed sloths spend most of their life hanging upside down from tree branches. They mate, give birth, and raise their young without ever leaving the arboreal sanctuaries.

Guy, the male sloth, and Ana were first introduced in 2013 at Wild Florida Wildlife Park where the pair's slow-mance began shortly after their arrival. Once it was confirmed that Ana was pregnant, she was removed from their combined exhibit for the lengthy gestation period of 11 to 12 months.

"We are in love with George," states Wild Florida co-owner, Sam Haught. "We're so excited to have this opportunity to watch this little guy grow and interact with our guests at Wild Florida."

The birth of George is nothing less than a miracle as Wild Florida is one of only a handful of zoos and/or attractions around the world to have successfully bred a pair of two-toed sloths. The nocturnal mammals are native to South America.
